Calf MRI Scan

A Calf MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging technique used to obtain detailed images of the calf muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and vascular structures. The scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create high-resolution images without exposing the patient to ionizing radiation.

Why is it Performed?

Calf MRIs are performed for various diagnostic and monitoring purposes, including:

  • Muscle Injuries: To detect strains, tears, or ruptures in muscles like the gastrocnemius and soleus.
  • Tendon Pathologies: To identify issues like tendinitis or partial/complete tendon ruptures.
  • Vascular Conditions: To assess blood flow and perfusion in conditions like Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), where blood supply to the calf muscles may be impaired.
  • Tumors or Masses: To identify soft tissue tumors or abnormal growths.
  • Chronic Conditions: To monitor chronic pain, atrophy, or inflammatory conditions in the calf.
  • Post-Injury or Surgical Evaluation: To assess healing and complications after injuries or procedures.

What are the benefits?

  • High Resolution: Provides detailed imaging of both soft tissue and vascular structures, helping in accurate diagnosis.
  • Non-Invasive: Offers a safer alternative to exploratory procedures or CT scans, as it doesn’t involve radiation.
  • Wide Application: Can evaluate multiple conditions, from trauma to chronic vascular diseases.
  • Dynamic Imaging: Functional MRI techniques like contrast-enhanced imaging allow real-time assessment of blood flow, beneficial for vascular conditions

What are the limitations?

  • Motion Sensitivity: The quality of images can be affected by patient movement during the scan.
  • High Cost and Accessibility: MRI scans are expensive and may not be readily available in all regions.
  • Time-Consuming: The procedure, especially with functional imaging, may take 30–60 minutes.
  • Limited Vascular Detail Without Contrast: Without a contrast agent, vascular structures may not be as clearly defined.
  • Chronic Condition Diagnosis: Small chronic tears or subtle changes may not always be apparent in early stages without advanced imaging techniques.
  • Interpretation Challenges: Curved or overlapping muscle structures can make certain areas difficult to evaluate without careful cross-referencing of axial, sagittal, and coronal views.

How to Book a Scan

I do not have a Referral Letter

If you do not have the referral letter from your GP or any clinician - please fill in the Self Refer form and we will connect you to a third party GP practice or an independent private doctor who can recommend an appropriate scan and prepare the scan instructions. The imaging centre staff will then contact you to provide an appointment. After the appointment the reports are sent to the same doctor and they forward it to you.

I have a Referral Letter

If you have a referral letter from your GP, Consultant, Physiotherapist or Osteopath - simply upload the letter and add their contact details. We will forward it to your nearest or chosen imaging centre and their staff will call you to provide an appointment as per your convenience. The report will be sent to the referring clinician after the scan. Your referring clinician can also send us the referral directly and we will forward to the imaging centre.
